Calling Obama

BILL Clinton loved it here and now a cheeky bid has been launched to lure US president-elect Barack Obama to Port Douglas' famed Four Mile Beach.

Port Douglas Daintree Tourism boss Doug Ryan said letters and emails inviting the charismatic Mr Obama to the Far North had been sent this week and he was hopeful of soon receiving a positive answer.

When The Cairns Post called, Mr Ryan was meeting with representatives of the Sheraton Mirage to finalise an accommodation package.

Will Obama visit? Have your say here.

"We are serious, you do not send a letter and an email to the White House if you are not,"  Mr Ryan said.

And Mr Ryan has every right to be hopeful with former US President Bill Clinton having holidayed twice at the seaside village, north of Cairns.

Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the Saudi Arabian Royal family and "too many A-list movie stars to name" were just a few of the world's power brokers and stars to wet their feet while walking Four Mile Beach, he said.

While Mr Ryan said PDDT was happy to pay for Mr Obama's accommodation, meals and tours, he drew the line at flights for the president-elect's "hanger-ons".

"I am not chartering Air Force One," he said.

"I am sure the entourage can take care of itself."

Quicksilver boss Tony Baker said if Mr Obama accepted the invitation, it would be a massive boost for the region's economy.
