Stormy times ahead
YESTERDAY'S drenching is just a taste of things to come with more rain and possible thunderstorms tipped as the monsoon kicks in over the next month.
Weather bureau forecaster Alicia Duncanson said heavier rain and thunderstorms would hit the Far North as the trough moved towards the coast.
"We’ve had cyclones in November before and with the temperature that we’ve been having, it’s not unusual for this sort of weather," Ms Duncanson said.
"We’re not in the real wet or monsoon yet, another month and it will kick in."
Ms Duncanson said Emerald Crest on the Tableland was soaked with 104mm yesterday while Herberton received only 13mm.
Brisbane-based forecaster Gavin Holcombe said the trough that caused the destructive storms in the state’s southeast earlier this week had now changed pattern.
"There’s now a broad trough over western Queensland," he said.
"Conditions are very sultry in Cairns and that’s going to trigger more showers and storms but that’s fairly typical of the Far North at this time of the year."
