SCHOOL'S out for hundreds of students across the region.

Year 12 students close their textbooks and wave goodbye to secondary education today, marking the start of the Schoolies party season.

But with the start of the fun comes a warning from police - celebrate but stay safe.

Caitlin Harvey and Emmagen Blacklow, from St Mary's Catholic College will today head to the notorious Schoolies Week celebrations on the Gold Coast.

The 17-year-olds have been saving all year to be able to hit the popular destination for some "wicked partying".

"We've got about $1000 each," Emmagen said.

"We've been working a lot to get big pay cheques."

The girls said they would spend a day at Dream World and go shopping, ride around on a scooter and relax with a massage at a day spa.

"Half of our school is going to the Gold Coast," Emmagen said.

"It's always been the place to go but a few of the boys from school are going fishing at Tinaroo."

Other hotspots for schoolies are Airlie Beach and Magnetic Island.

District crime prevention co-ordinator Acting Sgt Cary Coolican warned against partying too hard, particularly at remote sites.

"Alcohol and illegal substances mixed with difficult to reach areas often end in disaster with someone being injured or killed," she said.

"While it may reduce the number of noise complaints, this often leads to the added problem that emergency services such as paramedics can't access them in the event of an emergency.

"We would certainly encourage everyone to have a great time over the Schoolies period. However, take the time to plan and prepare your party."
