A NEW top cop is patrolling the beat with big plans to boost the district's safety and reduce crime.

years experience in the police force including stints in Cairns and Thursday Island, has been appointed as the new Cairns District Acting Superintendent.

The appointment of Acting Supt Carter coincided with the introduction of four new constables – Lisa Giddy, Luke Walker, Danielle De-Waal and Michael Gleed.

Acting Supt Carter started in the role this week, a position he hopes will soon become permanent.

"It’s fabulous to be back in Cairns," he said.

The new boss is in charge of about 500 officers who serve in the 150,000sq km district that covers Cairns, Port Douglas, Mossman, Cooktown, Cape York and the Torres Strait.

And with just four days under his belt he has already started working out strategies to improve public safety in the district’s three main areas: the Cairns business district, suburban and remote communities.

"I want to see the community have some confidence in the police," he said. "Public safety is our one, two and three concern."
