BREAKING NEWS: Tableland police are on the hunt for a man who broke into a house in Malanda and assaulted a woman last night.

The woman was woken by a knock on the door at 11.20pm and remained in bed but could hear a male voice yelling at her.

A police spokesman said the man entered the residence and assaulted the woman. 

"She managed to flee and alerted police," he said. 

The man is 160cm tall, has a dark complexion and was of medium build with black hair.  

He was wearing black pants and a short sleeved black T-shirt.

Malanda is about 90 minutes drive southwest of Cairns.
