2 Aussie music legends hit town
The year is winding down fast but there's still plenty on in and around town over the next week or so.
The highlight is country music legend John Williamson who returns to Brothers Leagues Club this Saturday night with musician, collaborator and friend Warren H. Williams in support.
For those who haven’t been to a John Williamson concert, it’s almost like a big campfire gig.
He not only takes songs from his massive repertoire, he tells stories about where he has been, what he is doing and who he has met recently.
It really is a superb show to go and see and I encourage anyone that hasn’t witnessed John Williamson live to head along on Saturday.
According to Brothers Leagues Club, there are still tickets available for Saturday night so ring 4053 1053 to book.
Another Australian legend (well, he’s a Kiwi but like all successful New Zealanders we claim them as our own) Jon Stevens heads back to Cairns for the second time this year to play at Vertigo Bar next Wednesday and Thursday night.
The Noiseworks frontman has become quite an accomplished soloist over the past decade and tours regularly.
Jon performs a wide range of stuff including some of his bigger hits with Noiseworks.
Vertigo Bar should be packed out again next week so if you’re a fan of Jon Stevens, get down there early to avoid standing in the foyer.
Also this week, indigenous artist Thanakupi opens her latest ceramic exhibition at the KickArts Upper Gallery tomorrow night.
The North Queensland Academy Of Dramatic Art (NQADA) will perform the Morris Gleitzman play Boy Overboard (adapted by Patricia Cornelius) at the Rondo Theatre from today until Sunday.
The Heritage hosts a Movember party this Sunday to raise funds for an array of men’s health issues.
The Heritage’s resident DJs will spin the latest house and electro including Tim Park, who won the DJ battle at Stockland Earlville on Tuesday for the right to open the Cairns Music Festival at Fogarty Park next month.
And of course, don’t forget Baz Luhrmann’s blockbuster Australia was released nationally yesterday and is now showing at cinemas around Cairns.
Starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, Australia is one of the most hyped films made in Australia. There have been mixed reviews by all the big critics but the best thing to do is go see it yourself.
Finally, this will be my last week editing timeOUT. My replacement is Jesse Kuch and I wish him luck in his new role. I’ve been editing timeOUT since April 2006 and have enjoyed every moment of the job.
I’m moving to Brisbane to take up a roll with the commuter paper mX.
I’d like to thank all the contributors who have allowed timeOUT to have so much quality content every week.
I’d also like to thank you, the readers, for supporting the only entertainment guide in Cairns and all the messages of support (and the odd criticism of course) over my term here.
Have a great week everybody!
