Classical Christmas
An acclaimed pianist is treating the Far North to three festive concerts.
Back in the Far North by popular demand, Encore Concerts is proud to present a series of Christmas concerts by Ukrainian-born piano maestro Evgeny Ukhanov – his last shows in Australia for the year.
The concerts will showcase the young musician’s talent in various intimate settings across the region, giving classical music lovers plenty to be happy about this festive season.
Ukhanov (pictured right) began his musical education at a young age, attending Russian music schools before winning a major prize in the Horowitz Piano Competition for young musicians in Kiev at the tender age of 12.
He was awarded a scholarship to study in Australia at the age of 15, following it up with another major prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2000 with an outstanding performance of Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto at the Sydney Opera House.
Since then, he has established himself as one of the world’s best young concert pianists, performing regular solo recitals in Germany, Italy, France, England, Japan, Ukraine and Australia to name a few.
The Christmas concert opens with Songs Without Words by Mendelsson, followed by Chopin’s waltzes and ballades.
The concert finishes with the monumental B-minor Sonata by Liszt, in the second half of the program.
>> Evgeny Ukhanov performs tomorrow at Yungaburra from 7pm and on Saturday in Cairns from 5pm. Tickets are $20 adults, $15 concession, $10 children. Ph: 4093 9018. Tickets to the Sunday concert in Cooktown are $25. Ph: 4069 6013.
