The red carpet is rolled out for top house and breaks man, Phil K on Saturday night.

The Lounge celebrates its first birthday this weekend by rolling out the red carpet for one of Australia’s biggest and best known house and breaks producers, Melbourne’s Phil K.

Phil K needs little introduction to the Cairns dance community – he has been a regular visitor and a crowd favourite of the Far North for many years.

After beginning his DJ career at a high school disco in 1985, Phil earned his stripes in Melbourne’s underground house and breaks scene, regularly playing at nearly all of Melbourne’s best-loved dance venues.

His first big break came in 1996 with the release of Summer Breeze under the moniker The Free Radicals (together with fellow Melbournites Andy Page and Ivan Gogh) and since then Phil has gone on to do everything from mixing super-successful compilations for Y4K and the Balance Series to touring nearly every country imaginable in far-flung corners of the globe.

These days Phil is recognised as one of Australia’s true dance music pioneers, with his work with electronics manufacturer Pioneer perhaps his greatest achievement to date.

Working as a representative DJ for the company, he has been intimately involved with the creation of some of their most advanced equipment including the groundbreaking DVDJ-X1.

The DVDJ-X1 is a real step forward in digital mixing, allowing the user to seamlessly blend audio and visual elements on the fly. The end result is a feast not only for the ears, but the eyes as well.

He was recently voted by Mix Mag as one of the world’s top 10 audio-visual DJs and continues to push the boundaries of what many think is possible with the technology at hand (it is even rumoured that he rang Pioneer and informed them of features of their equipment they hadn’t discovered yet themselves).

One thing is for sure – his monster bass lines, cutting-edge DJ skills and innovative approach to his craft guarantee that every time you catch a Phil K show, you are in for a treat.

>> Phil K brings his show to The Lounge’s first birthday celebration this Saturday, supported by residents Chooky and Smooth-e. Doors open to the public from 11pm, with a strict Lounge members-only party from 10pm.
