Extravagant imported costumes and a talented cast are bringing a theatre classic alive.

he Cairns Choral Society is well into the rehearsal schedule for its January production of The Kind and I, which begins showing at the Cairns Civic Theatre on January 9.

The King and I is a magical show; a spectacle of sound and colour, suitable for the whole the family.

This Rodgers and Hammerstein musical has won many awards in the world of show business.

It is one of the greatest Broadway successes of all time, running for more than 1000 performances and winning the Tony Award for Best Musical, among many others.

More recently, the show has been revived on London’s West End with rave reviews.

Based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, The King and I is a story full of romance, heartbreak and opposing cultures.

The Cairns Choral Society has gone to massive efforts for its final production of the year, putting together a very talented cast that includes numerous dancers, singers and of course, the children.

The costumes are lavish with many of the unique fabrics coming direct from Thailand for the show.

Venera Walsh is directing for the first time for the society and says she is thoroughly enjoying her work as she co-ordinates all the aspects of bringing the show together.

"It has been a total pleasure recreating a timeless classic like The King and I," she says.
