MARTIN Hurst has received recognition for holding the purse strings at one of Queensland's biggest country leagues by receiving life membership to the Cairns District Rugby League.

Hurst has been CDRL treasurer for more than 10 years but his affiliation with league started long ago.

He first started volunteering while at school, helping his great-uncle – the Brothers providor – sell drinks from the club’s house on the corner of Anderson and English Sts where the Brothers Leagues Club now stands.

Hurst joined Brothers’ management committee in 1981, becoming secretary in 1984-85 before leaving the Far North for work.

His connection with rugby league continued when Hurst joined the Toowoomba All Whites and Brisbane Easts committees through the late 1980s and early 90s.

He contacted the CDRL to volunteer on return to the Far North in 1996 and in 1999 started a stint as treasurer which will continue for an 11th season after he was returned at the recent AGM.

Also an amateur historian who is working on the story of the sport in the Far North, Hurst said he enjoyed his work with the CDRL.

"It keeps my mind active otherwise I’d go stir crazy," he said. "I try to do what I can to help clubs where I can help them."

That involves information on and assistance with applying for grants and league-wide initiatives such as subsidies for referees’ fees and player insurance.
