BMX club celebrations
IT was the surprise hit of the Olympics but BMX is no new fad.
Cairns BMX will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a monster birthday bash at the weekend, with festivities including a coaching clinic, two-day race meet and special history area.
Olympian Luke Madill and multi national-title winner Caroline Buchanan will conduct a coaching clinic for members tomorrow and both will show off their skills when they take part in the club’s annual Christmas meet at the weekend.
More than 250 nominations have been received for the meet, which starts at 3.30pm on Saturday and includes a fireworks display that night.
Last motos and finals will be raced on Sunday, with finals held from about 11am.
Cairns official Sharon Geck said club rooms had been decorated with historical items and past members were invited back to share their memories.
Several high-profile riders will join Madill, Buchanan and locals in racing over the weekend.
"Cairns is a pretty well-known track now," Geck said.
"We’ve put on nationals and we’ve put on a state titles and we run a pretty good do."
Entry to the meet is free for spectators.
