Track drain work starts

DRAINAGE work will soon begin at Cannon Park in an attempt to ensure the washout which caused the first day of this year's Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival to be cancelled does not happen again.

Brisbane Turf Club course manager Warren Williams is flying up from Brisbane to lend his expertise on the issue.

The first day of the Cairns Amateurs was called off on September 12 when it was deemed two sections of the track – the turn into the home straight and a stretch before the 800m mark – unsafe to race on following 80mm of rain.

The drainage work, which is hoped will prevent waterlogging, will focus on a section of track between the 600m and 400m mark.

Tomorrow’s Mayor’s Christmas Appeal Race Day is the last meet of the year at Cannon Park before racing resumes on April 11.

The cost of the work, which will be met entirely by the club, had not been finalised.
