Young hands dig deep
THESE little green thumbs from St Andrew's Catholic College yesterday dug deep to revegetate a site near their Redlynch school.
About 250 trees were planted when the students joined Cairns Regional Council's natural resources team at the Redlynch Multi Use Sporting Facility.
Project co-ordinator Russell Wild said the sporting facility was near completion and the tree planting would be the students' contribution to greening their neighbourhood in the lead-up to Tropical Tree Day on Sunday.
Tropical Tree Day is one of 12 days chosen as an alternative to the annual National Tree Day.
"With the wet season rains approaching the time is right for tropical tree species to thrive once in the ground," Mr Wild said.
Grade 5 student Megan Gordon, 10, said the activity put into practice what they had learnt about the environment this year.
"It's really fun and it's good for our school environment."
Three sites will be planted on Sunday in the Cairns Regional Council area, including Cowie St, Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas, the Cairns Central Swamp and Quartzborough Promenade, Smithfield.
