Bulls on the charge
THE FNQ Bulls will roar into action for the first time tomorrow when the new Queensland State League soccer club stages an in-house trial match at Mareeba.
The trial at Borzi Park will provide Bulls head coach Peter Tokesi with a chance to study his playing talent in a match situation after four weeks of training.
The Bulls have drawn a number of the region’s leading players to the fold with about 15 Mareeba players and another 10 from throughout the FNQ region vying for spots in the 2009 squad.
Inaugural Bulls captain Victor Madrid will line up in tomorrow’s match along with other experienced Mareeba players Dennis Allen, Daniel Wilesmith and Anthony Mete.
Young Mareeba products Steven Cater, Nathan Bird, Tamas Maffey-Stumpe and Paul Ruiz will also be in action.
Among those hailing from outside the Bulls’ headquarters are Leichhardt trio Glen Hurney, Kane Alderton and Angelo Serafin, Stratford stalwart Andrew Lohman and Innisfail pair Renzo Franco and Damian McLeod.
Bulls football manager Alex Srhoj said the Bulls were pleased with the talent on hand and the way the team was gelling as a unit.
"There’s a very positive atmosphere around the club and squad-wise we feel we are moving in the right direction," Srhoj said.
"It will take everyone time to learn to play to (Tokesi’s) style. But the boys are enjoying it. They’ve had to step up a level and some of them have lost a few kilos."
Although a noted defender in his days with Brisbane City in the old National Soccer League premiership, Tokesi is keen to push an attacking style of play.
Srhoj said the Bulls would look to have an immediate impact on the 2009 QSL premiership.
"By the time we play our first home game in the opening round against Capricorn Cougars on March 7, we’ll be looking for a positive result," he said.
Tomorrow’s game starts at 4pm at Borzi Park, Mareeba.
