Kick back: The Fitzroy Island Hunt Resort.

Kick back: The Fitzroy Island Hunt Resort.

THE first official guests will this weekend check into Far North Queensland’s first new Island resort in many years, the Fitzroy Island Hunt Resort.

The Great Barrier Reef’s first ever fully equipped movie cinema, a food court, boutique retail precinct, function rooms and a spectacular central pool area are just some of the features of the $100 million resort.

Hunt Trading Group managing director Joshua Hunt said getting the project off the ground had not been all easy.

“Logistically, it’s been an enormous exercise to build a resort of this magnitude on an island. We’ve had furnishings stuck on docks because of hurricanes, building-sized rocks that we had to blow up before we could even start laying foundations, and the economic climate this year hasn’t been ideal."

Hunt Resort will be on show to Australia early next year, when the opening weeks of The Biggest Loser are broadcast.

Contestants and about 100 support people found themselves on Fitzroy Island for the first fortnight of the next series, filmed early last month while resort construction continued around them.

When the show airs, Australian audiences will see a spectacular international-standard resort lapped by clear waters, on a backdrop of pristine rainforest-covered mountains.
