Crocs alive!

Living in Far North Queensland, there's no shortage of croc stories and, sadly, most of them are tragic.

Headlines shout "deadly man-eater" or "killer croc" for a very good reason.

In his book Croc!, author Robert Reid says of all the different species of crocodile that inhabit the world's tropics, the Australian saltwater crocodile is the largest and most aggressive ... it is instinctively a killing machine with immense power and the ability to stalk its prey with deadly patience.

Photographer Nellie Ireland has captured this feared animal in all its glory at the Cairns Tropical Zoo and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures.

The images are a powerful reminder that crocodiles are to be respected as Australia's No.1 predator.

See Nellie's amazing crocodile photos.

Just a baby: This two-day-old freshwater crocodile at Hartley's Crocodile Adventures is one of the smaller and friendlier varieties.
