World's best: Hollywood star Kate Hudson snapped at Lizard Island with Matthew McConaughey

HOLLYWOOD star Kate Hudson has given the Far North a huge plug by dubbing Lizard Island Resort the most romantic place in the world.

Hudson visited the island with heart throb Matthew McConaughey in 2006 to film the romantic thriller Fool's Gold.

Hudson's words could not have come at a better time, with the Far North battling doom and gloom predictions of a bleak future in tourism.

"It's a honeymoon destination in the middle of nowhere," Hudson said during an interview to promote her latest flick Bride Wars.

"I shot Fool's Gold there with Matthew McConaughey. There's a small landing strip at the resort and you fly there on a little prop plane."

The film, shot largely on the Great Barrier Reef, earned $US22 million ($24 million) to claim the No. 1 spot in US and Canadian theatres in February 2008.

Fool's Gold was also a winner in Australian cinemas, taking the top spot with almost $2 million.

The A-listers were spotted in, and around, Port Douglas for the duration of the shoot, with McConaughey even hosting his 37th birthday bash in the seaside locality.
