COLOURFUL Kennedy MP Bob Katter has urged Far Northerners to carry a "good calibre rifle" and shoot crocs around flooded creeks and rivers.

The sighting of a large number of crocodiles at the Norman River causeway has prompted Mr Katter to warn people not to walk crossings to check river depths before driving across them unless they have a gun.

Mr Katter, who has repeatedly called for a croc cull, plans to inspect waterways today at Karumba, Normanton and Georgetown by light aircraft to gauge the number of crocs in the areas.

He fears croc numbers are swelling out of control and said if the law would not bring them into check, locals should take it upon themselves to ensure their safety.

"We were all brought up to walk a flooded creek or rising river first so we knew if it was safe to cross and had not been washed away," he said.

"This bush rule must be overturned because of the proliferation of crocs."

Mr Katter has called on the Government to change laws protecting crocodiles at the expense of people and has accused "human hating greenies" of putting the lives of crocs above all else.

He said on average once every 18 months someone is killed by a crocodile and the carnage had to stop.

"It would be very dangerous for anyone anywhere much west of Mt Surprise or north of Karumba to get out of the car at flooded creeks and crossings without very great care," he said.

"I would urge again the necessity for a good calibre rifle (because) people must understand the threat here is very real.

"And if you are not going to take my advice, then you will have to come up with a strategy for what’s a very difficult situation."
