Injury woes for Cook
TAIPANS guard Scott Cook will continue the fight to get on court for Saturday's final match of the season despite learning yesterday he has osteitis pubis.
While Cook does have two small hernias, the osteitis pubis – an inflammatory condition most prevalent in AFL footballers – was diagnosed yesterday after he had an MRI scan last week.
"The signs and symptoms of it were there over the whole season but we didn’t pick up on it until the MRI," Cook said.
While rest is the best medicine, Cook wants nothing more than to be able to take the court with his teammates on Saturday to finish off what he described as a "bugger of a season".
Cook will not travel to New Zealand with the Taipans today for Thursday’s match against the Breakers, instead undergoing another steroid injection yesterday in a bid to get on court by Saturday.
"I’d love to keep going but playing the last game (in Sydney last Wednesday), I was really struggling," he said.
"I’d love to be able to give the boys a break but if there’s someone else out there that can do a better job, they’d probably be better out there."
Taipans coach Mark Beecroft said Cook had difficulty pushing off and changing direction in games and was pulling up sore in the aftermath.
"Everyone wants to do the right thing, the best thing," Beecroft said of his players’ desire to see out the season strongly.
"Scott’s very disappointed he can’t do the things he (usually) does very well."
Cook has been nursing what he originally thought were hernia and adductor muscle problems for almost three months, all the while worried about his future in the NBL after the Taipans went into administration in December.
Initially hoping to rush his recovery to be able to play the upcoming ABA season and push his chances of picking up a contract for the "new NBL", Cook’s spirits have been bolstered by recent efforts at community ownership.
Cook would love to be part of a Taipans team competing next season. "(The continuation of the team would) definitely help the cause," he said. "Everyone up here knows what I’ve gone through for the team … and they know what I’m capable of doing."
