Croc warning bells ring

A 4.5m crocodile kept anglers off the banks of Thomatis Creek at Holloways Beach, north of Cairns, yesterday afternoon.

Andre Hannequin discovered the croc sunbaking on the bank of the creek about 2.30pm.

Mr Hannequin said an even bigger croc had left the bank and swum away 10 minutes earlier.

The sighting comes just days after crocodile protection agencies failed to warn people a popular Gordonvale swimming hole could be a croc hot spot.

Cairns Regional Council and the Environmental Protection Agency will put up crocodile warning signs after a sighting was made in the Mulgrave River at the popular Green Patch swimming area on Saturday afternoon.

A council source said it was believed the council had put up signs in the area but failed to replace them after they disappeared.

Under a crocodile management agreement, the EPA provides crocodile warning signs and the council is responsible for putting up and maintaining them. Gordonvale councillor Paul Gregory suspected previous warning signs had been shifted by workers of the $48 million Mulgrave River bridge.

He also said the council would fast-track new signs after revelations of the sighting left croc protectors red-faced.

"The signs will be going up as soon as the water goes down," Cr Gregory said.

"I would think they (warning signs) might have been shifted in preparation for the job site."

Cr Gregory could not confirm when signs had last been at the spot.

Gordonvale resident Chris Sullivan said over the past 14 years he had been swimming at Green Patch, he had never seen a croc warning sign. He also feared for the safety of the children who regularly visited the spot each weekend for a swim.

The EPA put up two temporary crocodile sighting warning signs on Monday night.

Eyes on you: It was a case of who was watching who at Holloways Beach yesterday when a boatie ready for a spot of creek fishing was caught in the gaze of a large croc on the opposite bank.
