Training ticket to world
NEW Horizons is determined to make the Far North computer-savvy.
The IT training company has added Cairns to its global network of learning centres, setting up a hi-tech office at The Pier.
With more than 300 centres in more than 50 countries, New Horizons specialises in technical certifications including Microsoft, Linux, Cisco, Adobe and ITIL and courses in software applications.
The Cairns branch`s owner Lynn Maguire said the courses were suited to both businesses and government departments which wanted to develop their staff and individuals who needed to upskill to boost their employment prospects.
She said New Horizons, which opened about two months ago, was the first service in the region to provide technical certifications for businesses and professional IT training in advanced applications.
"All of that has never been available in Cairns," Ms Maguire said.
"People previously had to fly to Brisbane.
"There`s been a good response. It`s soaring in terms of data getting out there."
The New Horizons office includes training rooms and the only Prometric testing room in Cairns for certification examinations.
Ms Maguire, a former Boeing Australia training executive, said classes were limited in numbers so learners were not "crammed" into rooms.
The service also includes online learning, professional development courses and the flexible ""Walk-in`` concept of training for staff.
"That`s the preferred option for companies because they don`t have to take their staff out for five days," Ms Maguire said.
The Cairns office took just 60 days to become a certified learning partner with Microsoft.
"We achieved that faster than any other New Horizons centre in the international network," Ms Maguire said.
Worldwide, New Horizons teaches more than 2.4 million students and has offices in major international cities and developing countries such as Nepal Cambodia, Uganda and Tanzania.
Ms Maguire said such an expansive network of affiliates gave the Cairns office resources and experiences to draw upon in its services.
