Beecroft new Taipans GM
FORMER assistant coach Mark Beecroft will become the top Taipan if the club is accepted into Basketball Australia's new elite competition.
Despite being offered the position of head coach of the "new Taipans" after finishing out the trying 2008-09 National Basketball League season successfully, Mr Beecroft has opted to take on the general manager’s role, believing he is in a unique position to be able to take the club forward.
Mr Beecroft led an all-Australian Taipans roster to a 4-7 record in the final two months of the season after former head coach Alan Black was axed by KPMG after the club was placed in administration last December.
"It took some thinking," Mr Beecroft said of his decision.
"I thoroughly enjoyed the coaching opportunity that presented itself last year.
"But one of the things I emphasised with the players was what’s best for the team, being selfless and thinking about what’s best for the Taipans organisation going forward."
Mr Beecroft said he had been touched by the community response to the possibility of the club folding.
"For 150 people or groups of people and syndicates (to become) foundation members (was amazing)," he said.
"The coaching was great but I see a bigger challenge in taking the club forward so that I have accountability in the community."
Taipans president Denis Donaghy said Mr Beecroft had earned the right to be the coach if he wanted to be.
"Mark made a counter offer by saying the direction the Taipans were heading, he felt he would be of more value to the organisation as general manager," Mr Donaghy said.
