Swinging through the trees
Swing through the trees with the greatest of ease: Jungle Surfing gives a view of the rainforest like no other.
There's a new species in the world's oldest rainforest - the wild Jungle Surfer!
Set on an eighteen hectare private reserve in the pristine Daintree rainforest at Cape Tribulation, around 2½ hours drive north of Cairns, the multi award winning Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours take visitors on a unique rainforest tour where their feet don’t touch the ground.
Seated comfortably in full body harnesses, Jungle Surfers fly through the trees on flying fox ziplines, stopping at five eco-friendly tree platforms to take in spectacular bird’s eye views over the treetops, down to cascading streams and out to the Great Barrier Reef.
Jungle Surfing Canopy Tours opened to the public in 2003, after nine years research and development, and one year of environmentally friendly construction.
Local pharmacist, tour guide & entrepreneur Stephen Walsh was originally inspired to create Jungle Surfing after watching the Sean Connery movie, Medicine Man, in the early 1990s.
The construction was completed entirely by hand, and the innovative design allows the platforms to sit securely around the trees without the need for a single nail or bolt to penetrate the trunks.
Jungle Surfing’s team of abseiling guides also use a unique system to belay customers along the ziplines, making it the only flying fox in the world where the guides control the course and customers of any age and physical ability can fly hands-free and carefree, without any previous experience necessary.
The longest span is over 75 metres and the platforms vary in height from 2.5 to 19.5 metres above the ground, offering unparalleled access to all levels of the rainforest canopy, and unique photo opportunities.
The highest point soars 22 metres above Mason Creek and on each platform the guides provide interpretive commentary about the rainforest to educate and entertain visitors to this spectacular environment.
Over its five years of operation, Jungle Surfing has grown from a small local business to an internationally renowned attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world.
They’ve also hosted team events for Honda, Toyota, Challenge Australia and many schools and colleges.
Jungle Surfing has been featured on Channel 7’s The Great Outdoors, Channel 10’s Totally Wild and Channel 9’s The Shak, and this year won two Tropical North Queensland Tourism Awards for Ecotourism & Adventure Tourism to add to its previous win at the 2006 Queensland Tourism Awards.
The tours last two hours, with around 1-1¼ hours spent up in the trees, and there are eight departures daily.
Tours cost $85 per person and include courtesy transfers from all accommodation within Cape Tribulation.
With harnesses to suit kids aged 3 up to adults weighing 120kg, you can bring the kids AND the grandparents – Jungle Surfing is the adventure activity for all ages.
