Labor claims local seats
LABOR has claimed victory in four of the six seats in the Far North after Saturday`s state election.
Anna Bligh claimed victory last night, making her the first woman in Australia to be elected premier.
At the close of counting on election night, Labor appeared to hold between 50 seats and 53 seats in the 89-seat parliament, down from 58.
The LNP looks set to take 35 seats, up from 25.
Four independents retained their seats.
With 67.68 per cent of the roll counted Cairns MP Desley Boyle, the sitting member since 1998, said she was happy at the result having 54.67 per cent of the vote after preferences.
She met with party faithful at Brother`s League Club last night, along with Cook MP Jason O`Brien, Barron River MP Steve Wettenhall and newly-elected Curtis Pitt, for the seat of Mulgrave.
"I`m exhausted," Ms Boyle told The Cairns Post this morning.
"It`s like I`ve been running on adrenalin all these last weeks.
"I think that in the end , the key message that Anna Bligh and Labor had been on about was the one that got us across the line. It was about jobs."
One Nation`s last sitting politician, Rosa Lee Long, says she will fight to the last redistributed vote before conceding the party is over.
Ms Lee Long, who held the seat of Tablelands for three terms as One Nation collapsed around her, had to contest the new seat of Dalrymple after Tableland boundaries were changed.
Queensland`s triumphant Premier Anna Bligh will announce her new cabinet line-up this week after her historic election win, while the Liberal National Party (LNP) searches for a new leader.
At the close of counting on Saturday night Ms Lee Long trailed the LNP`s Shane Knuth by 1010 votes, with Labor running a distant third.
Hinchinbrook MP Andrew Cripps held the seat for the LNP, receiving 58.63 per cent of the primary vote.
