Zine hunters to swoop on show for limited edition publications
Bubbling up from the depths of the Cairns underground, a new era of street press and random publishing is about to explode.
Tomorrow night, The Upholstery Contemporary Arts opens its first art exhibition event for 2009, entitled Gutter Trash.
Cairns has had a recent spate of zines, street press and random self publish ramblings, and The Upholstery is bringing them together to showcase the best, the random and the freakiest.
Zines are generally small, artist produced, self-printed publications, usually in limited numbers.
The titles and themes are whatever creators feel like incorporating, pretty much having no rules.
Ten Far North Queensland zines will be launched on the night, offering an unprecedented opportunity for culture lovers and collectors to get their hands on some very limited-edition and unique publications.
With titles such as Auxiliary (Cairns), Mondo Pig Guts (Cairns), Obscure (Atherton), and Fragile (Cairns), these print masterpieces will no doubt be sought-after and snapped up fast.
There is also national interest in Gutter Trash, with zine shops such as the well-known Sticky Institute in Melbourne keen to stock the titles, as well as collectors contacting us for issues.
Local bands, Mr Dr and Me and My Animals, will trashit up with their mayhem-inspired sounds and Green Ant Cantina will be doing their thing with the licensed bar.
Unlike most Upholstery shows, Gutter Trash is on display for two weeks at Crate 59, allowing viewers the chance to come back, have a coffee at Billy’s Coffee and check out the accompanying exhibition.
Many titles are expected to sell out on the night, so don’t miss the opening if you want the best possible selection.
>> Gutter Trash opens tomorrow night at Crate 59 on Sheridan St (opposite Choice Liquor) from 7pm-midnight. Entry is free.
