Bulls high on five goals
THE FNQ Bulls reminded fans why there are high hopes for the club's maiden Queensland State League campaign by crushing the Whitsunday Miners 5-1 at Borzi Park on Saturday night.
It was the Bulls’ second victory of the season and, undoubtedly, the side’s most ruthless performance in front of the net.
Creating chances has never been a problem for the men in orange but too often in the past wayward crossing and inaccurate shooting led to losses and draws at the end of 90 minutes instead of wins.
But not on Saturday.
Bulls coach Peter Tokesi said his players maintained their focus when it counted most.
"We’ve learnt our lessons from previous games that we’ve got to play for 90 minutes," he said.
"I’m still not totally happy because I think the last five to 10 minutes we slacked off a little bit but when you’re winning 5-1, it’s human nature to do that."
With their midfield controlling distribution, the Bulls attacked from the flanks with wingers George Koroma and Nathan Bird using their speed and weaving dribbling to beguile opposition defenders.
The constant pressure eventually told on the Miners when goalkeeper Brad Moss fumbled a low shot allowing Bulls forward Blake Cremer to slot home after 25 minutes.
The Bulls went into the break only 1-0 up but there would be no repeat of the second-half fade-outs that have plagued its early season showings.
Cremer cheekily lobbed the keeper to score his second five minutes after the restart before Alex Plowman made it 3-0. Better was to come for the Bulls when Dennis Allen scored the goal of the match with his long-range effort bulleting into the top right corner of the net.
The Miners pulled one back through Daniel Scotton late in the game but when Anthony Mete replied less than a minute later for the home team, the rout was completed.
With the Bulls travelling to face lowly placed Bundaberg this week, Tokesi said it was time for the club to build momentum.
"These are must-win games," he said. "We have to get three points to get off the bottom of the tabl."
