CAIRNS coach Laura Martin hopes nine of her players are rewarded with a state call-up when Queensland announces its squad for the AFL Women's National Championships this week.
The Cairns girls headed to Brisbane last weekend for games against Brisbane North and Brisbane South as part of the state titles.
While her side lost both matches, Martin said some of her players
deserved to be recognised by Queensland selectors.
"In particular we had nine players who stood up for the whole weekend," she said.
"They showed respect, they played well and showed they wanted to be there.
"If we get more than nine then that’s even better."
Cairns lined up against Brisbane North on the first day of the titles and went down 8.10 (58) to 4.4 (28) before losing to Brisbane South 6.4 (40) to 4.4 (28) the following afternoon.
Both games followed the same pattern, with the Brisbane sides pulling away from Cairns in the final quarter of each match.
Martin said fatigue hindered her team in its opening encounter.
"We were very flat, very lethargic. Most girls were pretty tired from the early morning start and shopping all day," she said.
The AFL Women’s National Championships will be played in Perth from June 3-7.
