A BIG finish and a Cubs A tactical error enabled Shogun Heat to claim an 11-8 victory in Sunday's Cairns Baseball League majors competition grand final replay at Trinity Beach.

Trailing 5-4 at the top of the final innings, Heat piled on seven runs against tiring Cubs pitcher Cameron Davis and then restricted their opponents to three runs in the final innings to seal the win.

Heat finished the match in style with short stop Mickey Takano, second base Ben Shepherd and first base Johnny Smith effecting a double play to end Cubs’ hopes.

Victorious skipper Ritchie Mounsey said fortune had favoured his side in the match.

"We certainly didn’t make it easy for ourselves early in the game," he said. "But then we were able to gradually wear (Davis) down. We were surprised (Cubs) left him on until the end.

"We had some lucky plays, a couple of chinkers fell in, and we left some runners on base but managed to get most of them in."

Cubs A captain Scott Webb conceded Davis had been left on the mound one innings too many after a typical whole-hearted performance.

"We had (relief pitcher) Greg Wicks there ready to go but we thought ‘don’t fix what’s not broken’," he said.

"In hindsight, Cameron had already pitched more than 100 pitches before that last innings. If we had known that, we would have pulled him off and have Wicksy to do the job for us."

The other majors competition matches were one-sided affairs with Shogun Black smashing Cubs B 23-0 and Heat B proving too strong for Reds 17-5.
