A WEEK after both were on the wrong end of thrashings, Cubs B and Reds battled out a tight Cairns Baseball League majors competition clash at Trinity Beach on Sunday.

Cubs B took the honours 6-5 to push aside memories of the previous weekend’s 23-0 loss to Shogun Black.

Cubs senior player Scott Webb was pleased with the quick turnaround.

"They were very disappointed at the way they played a week ago," he said.

"It certainly fired them up, they trained very hard last week. They knew it was a game they could win if they played at their best and they did that."

The Cubs B victory was forged on the back of pitcher Jason Scammell who struck out nine batters and threw down 59 strikes during his eight innings stint on the mound.

"He was a standout, especially when he’s coming back from a car accident about 10 weeks ago when he badly injured his ankle," Webb said.

Reds coach Kerry Ahlberg said his side was battling a long injury list but remained hopeful of stronger performances when the club was able to field a full-strength line-up.

"We’ve got a few out with injuries and we’ve had to fill key positions with good players but players who don’t usually play there," he said. "We’ve got a bunch of young kids playing and hopefully we will put it all together when everyone is back."

Keiran Warnock continued his good form with the bat for Reds while regular centre fielder Jesse Marnock showed his versatility to perform well at catcher.

Visiting Baseball Queensland development officer Shane Watson played a starring cameo role for Reds, figuring strongly with the bat and producing four assists and an out in the field.

Competition heavyweights Shogun Heat and Cubs A both flexed their might on Sunday, the Heat holding out a plucky Shogun Black 12-6 and Cubs A comfortably accounting for Heat B 11-2.
