HOLY cow! - now here's something you don't see every day.

Tanya Cahill made this shocking, if not funny discovery of a heifer with its head stuck firmly in a tree at the family’s Ravenshoe property.

The 14-month-old beast Princess Mary has managed to lodge her head firmly into a large gap.

It is the second time the namesake of the Danish princess has found herself in a sticky situation and her owners suspect it’s a case of a "good old scratch" going badly wrong.

This time an axe and chainsaw became the liberator but when she fell down a creek shaft at two weeks old, it was a shovel, an hour-long dig and a lot of grunt to freedom.

"We live in Aloomba but keep 100 head of cattle in Ravenshoe," Ms Cahill said.

"We came up to check them and I could not see Princess Mary so went looking for her.

"In the distance, I saw a hawk and I thought ‘this is not good’ but then I saw her near a tree."

Ms Cahill drove towards Princess Mary and circled the tree but could not see the animal’s head and it was only after a closer examination she realised it was "fair dinkum stuck".

"My dad came down with a chainsaw and we started to cut the tree and then we had to use an axe."

The rescue took about 30 minutes.

"We let them out on Saturday, so she must have been stuck in the tree for about three days," Ms Cahill said.

"It’s lucky we came today because another day and I think Princess Mary would have died."

The heifer is back with her herd and has no lasting injuries.
