HUNDREDS of keen young netballers descended on the Martyn St courts at the weekend to compete in the Marlin Coast Regional Carnival.
Division 1
Saints 1 kept their undefeated record intact and walked away with the winners’ trophy when they accounted for Leprechauns 1 25-14 in their round game. Only two teams nominated for division 1 so both teams played seven other games against division 2 teams.
Division 2
Sharks 2 defeated Tablelands 16-10 in the final game to win division 2. The teams were on equal points until the final round of the day with Sharks’ experience and stamina proving the difference.
Division 3
Leprechauns 3 edged out Julatten Jewels for the title after both teams finished on 19 points at the end of seven rounds. Leprechauns had the superior goal average.
Division 4
Port Douglas team Young Guns were crowned the champions with Titans (Innisfail) the runners-up.
Division 5
Bank of Qld Radars 5 and Smithy 2 had a tight tussle for the trophy with their meeting in round six the decider. Both teams had been undefeated until the match and all players were aware of the importance of the match.
There were plenty of mistakes in the first half before Radars players Jordan Tikitau and Jasmine Pue took control and outscored the opposition to take the game and the trophy 20-7.
Division 6
Leprechauns 6 went through undefeated to nudge out Cyclones 2.
Division 7
Nine teams all aged under 12 competed in division 7 with only a goal average separating Aces 2 and Gordonvale 2.
Both teams finished on 25 points.
