ALL the traditional excitement and extravagence of the circus is in town. The Great Moscow Circus has put up its big top in Cairns.

The centrepiece of the Great Moscow Circus is 6m high, made of steel and cages three motorbike riders travelling about 80km/h.

While the "Cage of Death" steals most of the crowd's excitement, the prelude to the show's final performance is nothing short of spectacular.

Through a series of tightly executed segments, the performers lay the platform for the final hair-raising stunt.

The Russian, Mongolian, Romanian and Brazilian crew of clowns, acrobats, daredevils and aerial artists performed in the show at Munro Martin Park.

One of the most impressive aspects about the circus was its ability to move with the times.

There were no elephants and tightropes, the performers stunned on the back drop of new material married with music of the 21st century.

And in a sign of dedication, when members of the circus were not performing, they were hawking hotdogs, fairy floss and balloons to the Cairns crowd.

It's the circus - they don't come around every month.

The chance to be engulfed by a titanic tent housing magic, flips and tricks and a slew of bright lights must not be missed.

Plus they have miniature ponies. I don't care what all the animal welfare groups say, there's nothing cooler than those little fellas.

The Moscow Circus continues at Munro Martin Park until Sunday. Tickets are $25 for adults, $16 for children.
