Naked woman stolen

THIEVES have stolen a statue of a naked woman from a Babinda garden in a crime police believe is no practical joke.

The culprits ripped wire stays out of the ground to steal the 1.5m sculpture from an elderly couple`s home along the Bruce Highway south of Cairns.

Babinda's Sergeant Bryn Lewis called for the statue's return.

"If this has been done as a sort of prank it's very disappointing," he said.

The statue, made from heavy black plastic or plaster, was of a woman kneeling down with her head resting on one hand.

"They cut its restraints and removed it," Sgt Lewis said.

"It was one of three, but in a spot about 30m from the road where there was good cover from the house."

The naked woman was stolen between May 15 and May 31, at a time when its owners out of town for medical reasons.

Sgt Lewis said the garden was a talking point of the town.

"These people take great pride in their garden," he said.

"It's immaculate and one of the talking points of the area.

"We'd be urging the culprit to return the garden ornament, or anyone with information to give us a call."

People can contact Babinda police on 4067 1120 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
