THIS stunning sight greeted Mission Beach boatie Paul Toogood near Dunk Island last week.

He caught this snap of one of the dolphins, in pod of about 30 that were playing near his boat, between Mission Beach and Dunk Island.

The operator of the Rainforest Apartments holiday units in Mission Beach was entertained with a show of flips and sprays by the passing dolphins.

“Halfway across to Dunk Island, they were surrounded by a pod of about 30 dolphins and turned the motor off and sat and watched for about 20 minutes,’’ he said.

"A couple of the dolphins put on a display splashing about and leaping out of the water.

"I was lucky enough to photograph one in mid-air with the cheap digital camera I had on board.

"While we were watching a couple of other boats came through the area and also stopped and watched the dolphins."

It's just one of the many incredible wildlife encounters on offer around Mission Beach, south of Cairns.

Besides marine mammals and underwater wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, the popular holiday spot is nestled in rainforest that is home to the endangered cassowary and other creatures unique to the Wet Tropics.
