Size no obstacle to success
HER players might not have size but Queensland North under-16 women's basketball assistant coach Cathy Smith hopes speed can propel her side to a top-four finish at the national championships.
Six Far Northern players are in the 10-woman squad heading to Tasmania later this week for the titles (July 11-18) at Ulverstone.
Basketballers Connie Finlay (c), Teyla Evans, Mercedes Hudson, Shanieka Ross, Ilayla Moke and Bryannie Perks will take part in the tournament, which has attracted 14 teams from across Australia and New Zealand.
Sides will be split into two pools of seven with the top two from each qualifying for the semi-finals after a round-robin competition.
Smith said Vic Country and South Australian Metro loomed as her side's biggest threats in its division.
"They are going to big girls," Smith said of Queensland North's opponents.
"We're not a particularly big side but we’re a fast side. We're aiming for a top-four finish but if we could do better than that then that would be fantastic.
"It's a bit of an unknown for me having never gone before but the head coach is very confident."
