Banana bender snaps record

EVER snapped a banana? How about 96 in a minute?

Mourilyan grower Graheme Celledoni is an unofficial Guinness world record breaker after 60 seconds of frenzied snapping at the Innisfail Show put him two bananas ahead of the world record.

Mr Celledoni broke the 94-banana record – held by New Yorker Ashrita Furman – in front of a roaring home crowd at the Innisfail Show on Thursday night.

It is 60 seconds he will remember for the rest of his life.

"It sounds funny now but you have to go through a pain barrier to keep going," he said.

"It’s one thing to snap 10 or 15 bananas. You get to 50 or 60 though and you’re cramping up … you’re flat out lifting your arms."

Innisfail’s champion snapped 99 bananas in his attempt, but three were ruled ineligible because the banana skin was still attached.

The world record attempt was officially filmed, photographed and documented.

Now the Far North’s growers will have to wait for official word from the Guinness authorities in London to see if they can boast the only banana-related record on the books.

Organiser Des Rackley said Mr Furman probably wouldn’t miss one record – the New Yorker also holds the Guinness world record for holding the most records. He has records for somersaulting, pogostick jumping up stairs and balancing milk bottles on his head.
