Paid parking for Cairns Central
PAY-for-parking works have started at Cairns Central shopping centre as the management prepares to start charging customers to use the centre.
But centre manager Derek Ariss yesterday refused to say how much customers will pay, or for how long they would be allowed to park for free.
He said the payment scheme was still being finalised. The changes, aimed to rid the centre of about 400 daily commuters who use the parking for free, are expected to take place within eight weeks.
It is believed boom gates will be built at entrances of the centre for ticketing.
Mr Ariss yesterday said he was unsure if the centre would start charging after two or three hours.
A poll run on cairns.com.au last month found that 62 per cent of people who voted in the survey would not shop there once paid parking was introduced at the centre.
Ninety-one votes, or 37.9 per cent of respondents, said they would continue using the centre once the changes were made.
