Goalie maintains spirited approach
IF there is one attribute all successful goalkeepers share it is that they are never afraid to give their defenders an old-fashioned bollocking when they deserve it.
FNQ Bulls custodian Daniel Wilesmith certainly does not mind raising his voice when he thinks it is required.
"I'll get up the fullbacks if they need it," the 24-year-old said.
"They're pretty good though. They'll take it on the chin and leave it on the field.
"It's been good playing behind them this season. Victor (Madrid), who is our captain, I've played alongside him for four or five years at Mareeba and we work really well together.
"Sometimes there is a problem but when it happens it's because of a lack of communication."
Wilesmith hopes he will not have to shout himself hoarse during tonight's Queensland State League match against the Bundaberg Spirit at Borzi Park.
It has been six long weeks since the Bulls last won in the league with the Mareeba-based side dropping to third bottom on the ladder.
But Wilesmith said the Bulls still had enough self-confidence to beat the last-placed Spirit.
"We've always believed in ourselves, it's that we're just not finishing our chances and that's what's killing us," he said.
"Our little mistakes turn into big mistakes.
"But we've trained well this week and we’re pretty positive we can get three points against the Spirit."
Coach Peter Tokesi shares his goalkeeper's optimism despite having to reshuffle his squad.
Defender Kane Alderton returns to the line-up from his red-card suspension while midfielder Joe Rusch moves from the bench into the starting side.
Mareeba striker David Ruiz joins the squad after scoring twice in the FNQ Football men's premier division last week but the Bulls will be without reliable defender Alex Plowman, who strained his hamstring at training.
Tokesi said it was a match the Bulls should win.
"Bundaberg have only got a point and I'd be lying if I said I didn't expect us to win but we still have to go out there and do it," he said.
The Bulls versus Spirit clash kicks off at 8pm. Earlier in the day Mareeba take on Stratford in women's (2.30pm), reserve (4pm) and premier division (6pm) action.
8 FNQ Bulls: Daniel Wilesmith (gk), Robert Pendenza, Kane Alderton, Renzo Franco, Cameron Morrison, Victor Madrid, Glenn Hurney, Dennis Allen, Joe Rusch, Steven Cater, Nick Notaras. Subs: David Ruiz, Gavin Jenkin, George Koroma.
