A MAN who was floored by a single punch at a Parramatta Park party last week has died of injuries allegedly suffered in the incident.

Police say the 45-year-old man died around noon on Saturday in Townsville Hospital, six days after the incident at a party in Martyn St.

The man, who is believed to be the father of an 18-year-old man who had been celebrating his birthday, was allegedly punched in the chest and suffered serious head injuries when his head hit the ground.

Palcon Sami, 30, faced Cairns Magistrates’ Court last Monday charged with grievous bodily harm in relation to the alleged assault.

He was remanded in custody, with the matter adjourned until August 31 for committal mention. No application for bail was made.

Far Northern region crime co-ordinator Insp John Hartwell said it was too early to say if further charges would be laid.

Det Insp Hartwell said the tragic incident highlighted how a simple altercation could escalate and have a deadly outcome with a lasting impact.

"It just reinforces the risk of people getting involved in fights – it shows the consequences can be fatal," he said.

"It impacts not only on the victim and the family but also on the assailant and their family."
