A man who allegedly assaulted a woman after trying to lure her to a creek to look at a crocodile has appeared in court.

The 20-year-old man is charged with two counts each of deprivation of liberty, sexual assault and assault with intent to rape.

He was arrested in Tully yesterday after extensive investigations into the alleged sexual assault of two women aged 19 and 26 in separate incidents in Cairns on April 29 this year.

In Cairns Magistrates' Court this morning, the case was adjourned until Thursday.

He was remanded in custody until Thursday.

However, police intend to oppose bail.

Yesterday, regional crime co-ordinator Det Insp John Hartwell said the man was located after an ongoing investigation by Cairns detectives.

In the first alleged attack, a Korean woman living in Cairns was walking along Grove St when she was approached by a man who asked her to accompany him to a nearby creek to look at a crocodile.

After the woman tried to run away, the man allegedly grabbed her and assaulted her before a passing motorist came to her aid.

Less than 30 minutes later, a German tourist was approached by a man at Centenary Lakes, who asked if she needed a tour guide.

The woman was allegedly thrown to the ground and assaulted before the man fled on a grey mountain bike.
