Ambo, police attackers face court

POLICE have called for the full weight of the law to come down on two men who pleaded guilty yesterday to seriously assaulting a police officer and a paramedic in separate weekend incidents.

Baros Herbert Sailor, 33, and Glen Stuart Ingui, 33, both of Cairns, were remanded in custody in Cairns Magistrates’ Court on separate charges of serious assault.

They will be sentenced on Friday.

Sailor, of Bungalow, was charged after spitting in the face of a police dog squad officer in Aumuller St, Westcourt, about 8.30pm on Saturday. He also pleaded guilty to causing a public nuisance and possessing a drug utensil.

Ingui’s serious assault charge relates to an incident at his home in Alabama Court, White Rock, about 3pm on the same day, where he punched an Edmonton paramedic in the side of the head as the officer tried to treat a woman injured during a domestic disturbance.

Police had to use capsicum spray to subdue Ingui, who has also pleaded guilty to obstructing police and causing a public nuisance.

The ambulance officer was treated in Cairns Base Hospital for facial injuries.

Cairns police district Supt Brent Carter yesterday called for strong judicial action to be delivered particularly to Ingui for his "cowardly and brutal attack" on an ambulance officer as he tried to help a patient.

"I can’t stress enough how sorry I am for what has happened to one of our valued paramedics," Supt Carter said.

He said at the least, Ingui should apologise to the officer. Far Northern region crime co-ordinator Insp John Hartwell described spitting as "the most despicable act".
