PALM Cove restaurant Nu Nu is the Far North Queensland Restaurant of the Year.

The 2009 Restaurant and Catering Queensland Far North Queensland Awards for Excellence were announced last night at the Pullman Reef Hotel Casino.

The winners will compete at the state awards in Brisbane in September.

The award comes after Nu Nu was named the Gourmet Traveller regional restaurant of the year for 2008. Last night, Nu Nu also picked up best breakfast and best contemporary Australian awards.

The restaurant, on Williams Esplanade overlooking the Palm Cove beach, serves modern Austrlaian cuisine, accented with delicate French touches.

More than 120 guests attended last night's awards dinner where the menu showcased Gulf of Carpentaria endeavour prawns, Tableland greens, Morganbury beef tenderloin and Innisfail bananas.

Other winners were: Best alfresco dining: Salsa Bar and Grill; best chef owner: M Yogo; best coffee shop/tea room: The Edge Food Store; best cafe restaurant: Cafe Fresq; best Chinese: Cafe China; best entertainment: Adelfia Greek Taverna; best themed: Bayleaf Balinese Restaurant; best European: Clement’s Restaurant and Wine Bar; best event caterer: Ochre Restaurant and Catering; best family: The Beach Shack Restaurant and Bar; best informal dining: Zinc Port Douglas; best new restaurant: Finz Port Douglas; professional development under 100 staff: Cafe China; best specialty cuisine: Bayleaf Balinese Restaurant; best fine dining restaurant: Tamarind Restaurant (Pullman Reef Hotel Casino); best seafood restaurant: On the Inlet; best steak: Waterbar and Grill; best venue caterer: Reef Catering Cairns; best wedding caterer: Port Douglas Catering; caterer of the year: Ochre Restaurant and Catering.
