Birdworld adds new colours
BIRDWORLD sacrificed one of their most expensive birds to bring four exotic lories to the Far North for a five-star "feather show".
The bird zoo swapped a prized scarlet macaw for two black-capped lories and a pair of chattering lories, the only birds of that kind in Far North Queensland, owner Ben Gale said.
"They’re so colourful, and because people have never seen them before, they will be a crowd-pleaser," Mr Gale said.
"We’re very excited to have them here, we’ve been looking for a pair of black caps for a while."
Birdworld traded a scarlet macaw, valued at about $12,000 in Queensland, for the lories, which sell for about $4000 a pair, to an exotic Victorian bird breeder last week.
But the zoo is adamant their acquisitions will prove a hit when the eight-month-old lories are released into their 1500sq m aviary with more than 500 birds today.
Birdworld plans to breed both species of birds.
