Cairns Central debates parking price

MOTORISTS are expected to start paying to park at Cairns Central shopping centre in about a fortnight, but centre management has not yet decided how much to charge.

The pay-for-parking works started at the centre in July and ticket machines have been installed at all drive-in entrances as well as entrances inside the centre.

But centre manager Derek Ariss said centre management had not decided how much customers would pay, or how many hours of parking would be free.

It is believed motorists would not pay for the first two to three hours of parking.

Would you pay to park at Cairns Central? How much would you pay? Post a comment.

Cairns residents have told The Cairns Post of their mixed reactions about the new system, which is expected to see an extra 400 daily commuters looking for a park on the streets.

A poll run on cairns.com.au found that 62 per cent of respondents would not shop there after the paid parking was
introduced.

Of the 240 respondents, 37.9 per cent said they would continue using the centre.
