Kids caught in footy team brawl

A BRAWL between up to 10 members of the same AFL club has been witnessed by children as young as 10.

Police were called to the Cairns City Cobras home ground at Holloways Beach about 3.30pm following reports of a brawl spilling outside the clubhouse.

By the time police arrived, the fight had ended and the majority of those involved had left.

One witness, who asked not to be named, yesterday told The Cairns Post she was concerned about the effect the fight had on the children who witnessed it.

"It was pretty bad. There were kids running around here and the police were called, it was that bad," she said.

While no games were being played at the venue on Sunday, the witness said the brawl was not a good image for the game in the Far North.

"I just thought it was pretty disgusting," she said.

AFL Cairns operations manager Melissa Dunstan said officials were aware of the brawl.

"Investigations are continuing and until we know what happened we are unable to comment further," she said.

Cairns police district Insp Russell Rhodes said initial police investigations suggested the incident began when an end of season drinking session got out of hand.

"It appears to be an end of season gathering where they were consuming liquor at their home ground, a disturbance occurred and during this a glass panel at the club was damaged," he said.

"At this point in time there are no official complaints of any assault and no injuries have been reported."
