Got your sealegs?
Island hopping: A Sealegs amphibious craft on the water.
AN amphibious craft named Sealegs is the latest addition to the fleet operated by Calypso Adventures based at Mission Beach, south of Cairns in Far North Queensland.
It's available for charter by groups of up to seven people to explore the beaches, reefs and islands offshore from Mission Beach.
Unlike others in the company's fleet, the rigid inflatable powerboat Sealegs has no need for jetties and ramps; it's driven straight from land into the water then on return, lowers its wheels and drives straight on to the beach.
Another role for the amphibian is to ferry people from the mainland to the Dunk Island resort and golf course.
Calypso offers various diving, snorkelling, jet-ski and Great Barrier Reef trips and also uses Sealegs as a pickup vehicle for customers staying around Mission Beach.
Reef exploration cruises are priced at $135 for adults and $80 for children, jet-ski tours $195 and a PADI scuba-diving course $410; a dive to the schooner Lady Bowen, wrecked on a shoal near Dunk Island in 1894, costs $225.
