UPDATE: The dust and haze choking Cairns will hang around for a few more days.

The dust, which now has a lace of smoke due to fire smouldering in the Atherton Tablelands, stretches across north Queensland as far south to Townsville and out to the Coral Sea.

Cairns senior forecaster Greg Bond says there needs to be a southerly change on Sunday to potentially see movement in the dust.

Despite the haze, temperatures in Cairns will reach 30C.

Visibility at Cairns Airport is currently at 5000m.

There have been no reports of flight disruptions.
