Great Barrier Reef cruise will leave you wanting more

There's something about the wind in your hair and the smell of saltwater in your nostrils that is revitalising. Then there's the fish, ah the wonderful fish.

A simple day trip to our own tropical island, Green Island, reminds us of what is waiting just a short boat ride away. We sometimes forget about Green Island in all the hullabaloo about various other tropical islands but it has its own charm that makes it all the more easy to relax.

Day trippers with Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises have the option of the full-day trip on the large catamaran or a half-day trip on the smaller and quicker Reef Rocket. While the rocket is quicker, giving more time for snorkelling and taking in the sights of Green Island, it may not be for everyone, particularly on those few days when the wind is a little more gusty than normal.

A buffet lunch is provided on the half-day as well as full-day adventure and the range of options for exploring nature above and below the ocean’s surface is vast. A trip on the semi-sub is strongly recommended as it gives an up-close view of some amazing wildlife, together with a brief talk about the fish and coral habits.

We were amazed at the way a sucker fish, which we originally thought was a small shark, would suction itself to the side of the semi-sub and come along for a ride. Introductory and certified diving is available and those with a penchant for adventure will be keen to try the tandem parasail.

Back on dry land, you might want to check out Marineland Melanesia, home to several crocs who might open an eye as you wander past, the odd turtle, plus a vast display of ceremonial masks and statues from various parts of Micronesia. Then there’s the resort shops, snorkelling off the beach or maybe just swimming.

One day really isn’t enough so you might need to tell the boat staff to pick you up in a day or two so you can extend your stay to an overnight one.
