'Let's make Vics bitter'

THE North Queensland Stingers over-35s team won't lack for motivation in today's AFL Masters National Carnival clash with Victoria Country at Cazalys.

Not only would a victory keep Stingers’ division two title hopes alive, but Stingers coach Rick Hanlon reckons nothing spurs on a side more than playing a team wearing "the big V" of Victoria.

"No matter what standard of competition, everyone enjoys playing the big V," he said.

"You’re playing a team from (the state) where the game was developed and is part of the heartland of AFL."

A win against the Victorian outfit in today’s 4.30pm clash, coupled with a South Australian victory over Northern Territory tomorrow afternoon at 1pm, could give Stingers the title.

However, Hanlon said that result would be a bonus.

"When you rely on other teams’ results, you’re not in a good position," he said.

"We’ll just play the best we can and try to finish full of running and see where that takes us."

Hanlon said he told his players to swim and stretch in order to help prepare them for today’s final encounter.

He said only Shaun Brack, who suffered a shoulder injury in Monday’s 32-point victory over South Australia, would be missing for today’s match.
