A GIANT water python caught devouring a duck couldn't digest his dinner and had to spit it out again just hours later.

Tableland Animal Refuge manager Jennifer Walsh was on a morning walk with her dogs along the irrigation channel at Adil Rd behind the sewerage treatment plant at Mareeba.

Ms Walsh said she often came across pythons and snakes, but had never seen reptiles swallow poultry.

"When I first saw the python it was crushing the duck," Ms Walsh said.

"I came back a few hours later and it was having trouble swallowing it and in the end when I went to check, it had spit it back out."
